FFSA announces inaugural Regional Round fixture

Raiders v Adelaide Blue Eagles

Whyalla Croatia Soccer Ground

Round 21

Football Federation SA is pleased to announce the Round 21 Premier League match between Raiders and Adelaide Blue Eagles will be played in Whyalla for an inaugural Regional Round fixture.

The event is a result of a partnership between FFSA, the Whyalla City Council and a number of Adelaide and Whyalla based companies who have financially supported the initiative.

The fixture marks the first time two Adelaide-based National Premier League clubs will play for competition points outside of Adelaide.

The match will be played at Whyalla Croatia Soccer Ground and follow a curtain raiser displaying the talents of Whyalla’s youth. A crowd of in excess of 2,000 spectators are expected to attend the inaugural event.

FFSA CEO Michael Carter said regional South Australia is critical in assisting to promote participation and raise the profile of football in the state.

“Regional South Australia deserves to see profile teams from Adelaide. Other codes are active in this area and we need to compete. Participation is linked to events of significance,” he said.
“An approach was made to two of the highest profile Premier League clubs in Adelaide and to Raiders and Adelaide Blue Eagles credit, they have supported this initiative. I hope to create an annual fixture in Whyalla between these two proud clubs.”
Whyalla Mayor Jim Pollock was also supportive of the Regional Round fixture.
“The hosting of this match aligns with the Council’s priority to support and facilitate major, unique events,” he said.
“With the profile that football currently has with the Socceroos again qualifying for the World Cup, we look forward to a large and enthusiastic crowd attending.”
Branko Suica, Raiders President, said his club is also excited by the concept.
“We think it’s a fantastic idea. It is great promotion for football to be playing this game in Whyalla and taking the Premier League to regional SA,” he said.
Adelaide Blue Eagles Chairman Rep Giordano agreed the Regional Round is a great initiative.
“We’re very happy to be going to Whyalla. It’s a very good idea that we’re taking football to regional areas,” he said.
